While dressing for dinner on New Year’s Eve, the last thing Marson Miles expects is to fall in love that night—with his wife’s nephew. But when Brody Norris arrives from California to join his uncle’s architectural firm, Marson finds his life turned upside down. And the quirky little town of Dumont, Wisconsin, will never be quite the same. "Inside Dumont" is a reflective exploration of Marson’s later-life journey, set against a loving portrait of the place he and Brody will call home. This impressionistic chronicle of their growing relationship—and the orbit of events leading up to it—is told from a variety of viewpoints within a fluid timeline. The novel’s dozen episodic narratives range from tender to suspenseful, from romantic to mysterious, all of them brightened with a good measure of humor.

Inside Dumont A Novel in Stories Michael Craft Books

Inside Dumont is a novel in stories that tells the story of Marson Miles and Brody Norris, covering in delightful turns the heritage, events and self-acceptance that led to them finding each other. Michael Craft manages to be simultaneously charming, wicked, insightful and hilarious, all the while examining the mysterious nooks and crannies of family, place and identity. This isn’t a novel or heroines and villains—it is a novel of competing desires, of personal frailties and identity searches—it is, in short, a novel of being human. No matter orientation, creed or color, the characters speak to what it means to be alive, making decisions that affect you and those around you in unforeseen ways for generations to come. The characters and thereby the stories are connected in surprising yet completely plausible ways, unified throughout by the provocative theme of the danger of guises. If there is a villain in this novel, it is pretense. From story to story, the conflict arises from characters who are either not being true to themselves or are downright living a lie. Resolution, like is so often the case in life, comes from the revelation of self. Inside Dumont is the work of an artist at the peak of his craft. Michael Craft asserts himself as an American writer of note with this fine piece of work.

Inside Dumont A Novel in Stories Michael Craft Books Reviews

This is a charming book that is a collection of stories in which the same characters are used. I love the characters and the Mr. Craft's writing style; and I love the way this book is put together.
Michael Craft has not lost his touch! Like all of his other novels (and I've read them all), "Inside Dumont" is written in his unique style, blending mystery, drama, and fun in every chapter. You feel like you're right there in Dumont. I highly recommend this latest novel. And if you haven't read any of his others, check those out as well. You won't be disappointed
The charms of life in a small Midwestern town are beautifully depicted in Inside Dumont. Interesting characters, full of quirks and foibles, interact throughout the range of short stories, together forming a short novel. Insights into the human condition pepper the affectionate as well as pointed prose. A wonderful read for the summer, or any season.
This was my first experience reading a “novel in stories,” and I approached the book with a bit of skepticism, but I was quickly won over. “Inside Dumont” is highly entertaining, while building an endearing portrayal of a small town and the May-December relationship that develops between Marson and Brody. The book is structured so that each of the chapters is self-contained, jumping back and forth in time, assembling the big picture you’re left with at the end. It was great, and I hope Michael Craft is planning a sequel.
Inside Dumont was written before FlabberGassed, but I'm glad I read FlabberGassed first. FlabberGassed and the irresistible (and very mysterious) Abyssinian cat Mr. Puss drew me completely into the world of Dumont, Wisconsin. It left nothing lacking when it came to the characters, but reading Inside Dumont added an extra layer of comfort with these folks. It was like visiting with old friends and having them tell me secrets. A very enjoyable read.
This is what Michael Craft told me in a Facebook comment, when I told him I had just purchased his long-awaited novel, "Inside Dumont." And, indeed, although it's been many years since his last Mark Manning mystery, it was like I had never left. Written as a series of vignettes, Craft allows his story of life, love, and mystery to unfold through the eyes of the principal characters. The book is cleverly and effectively written. You view the characters through the eyes of their neighbors as well as their own. I can't describing the style, other than that it's riveting and entertaining from the first page to the last.
Michael Craft's Inside Dumont is a rollicking romp! The author employs an interesting structure; he reveals the plot through a series of entertaining short stories. The device works quite well and guides us through the small, yet somewhat tony Wisconsin town. Because of Craft’s wonderful penchant for specific detail and snappy dialogue, the characters are well defined and fully intriguing. From the very start, the reader is lured into their personal worlds of passionate ambitions and closely guarded secrets. At the heart of it all is the heart-warming May-December romance between Marson Miles and Brody Norris. This latest offering from Mr. Craft, who is also known for his award-winning “Mark Manning” mystery series, will certainly attract and entertain new readers. And it will no doubt continue to delight his many devoted followers.
